In September 2009, a patient with lung cancer presented to the outpatient clinic and requested inpatient treatment. The patient’s case was reviewed: the patient had undergone chemotherapy and had been stable for some time, but now his coughing and wheezing worsened, and a CT review showed that the tumor was significantly enlarged. At that time, the patient was in poor condition and had difficulty even walking, needing to hold on to the wall in order to walk and could only bend over when sitting. After the patient was admitted to the hospital, the patient’s condition was analyzed: the patient’s cough and asthma were aggravated, and the CT review showed that the tumor in the lung was larger than before, so according to the tumor condition, chemotherapy should be given (the lesion was larger and should not be radiotherapy), but the patient’s physical condition was too poor at that time, so it was difficult for the patient to tolerate chemotherapy. Therefore, the treatment plan for the patient was to first administer traditional Chinese medicine and intravenous nutritional support, and then consider chemotherapy if the patient’s physical condition improved. On the third day of herbal medicine, the patient’s physical strength was significantly better than before. After two weeks, the patient’s physical condition improved significantly compared with the previous one, and the physical condition score basically met the requirements of chemotherapy. After two rounds of chemotherapy, the patient was reexamined in early November, and the CT showed that the tumor had shrunk significantly and reached partial remission. After two rounds of chemotherapy, a review was conducted in early November and the CT showed that the tumor had shrunk significantly and achieved partial remission. The basic treatment plan is to suspend the Western medical treatment after all 4 rounds of chemotherapy are completed, and to switch to the pure Chinese medical treatment stage. Summary: This patient is a typical case of successful combination of Chinese and Western medicine, which is very representative. At the current medical level, TCM and Western medicine have their own advantages and disadvantages. TCM is very advantageous for overall conditioning, but less effective in killing tumors. Western medicine is more effective in killing tumors, but it is more demanding on human body system and damages human body constitution. Therefore, TCM and Western medicine should be combined to have a good effect.
