What to do if your kneecap is protruding

Patients with a herniated patella can be treated as follows: 1. Such patients should visit an orthopedic or sports medicine department as soon as possible to clarify the cause of this symptom and then target treatment. For this condition, there may be internal knee joint effusion or congenital abnormal patellar shape.2. Patients who merely have a herniated patella but do not have any clinical symptoms can be temporarily left untreated and continue to be observed.3. Conservative treatment may be preferred in the early stage when knee joint effusion exists. Conservative treatment requires the patient to maintain strict bed rest, braking, rest, and to keep the knee joint warm. For severe effusion, fluid aspiration or arthroscopic surgery can be used. 4. Patellofemoral pain and patellofemoral instability caused by patellar abnormalities can be treated with soft tissue balancing surgery. The main principle of such surgery is to tighten the medial patellar ligament and soft tissue to release the lateral ligaments, and then restore the knee joint to its normal trajectory, eliminating the relevant clinical symptoms. 5. In some very serious cases, joint replacement of the patella is required.
