Clinical symptoms of liver qi upward include dizziness and headache, bitterness in the chest and hypochondrium (a collective term for the chest and ribcage area), redness in the face and deafness, and even vomiting of blood. It can be treated with Chinese medicines such as Diarrhea Heart Tang and Qing Jin Resolving Phlegm Tang. Laxative Heart Tang is used for treating vomiting of blood and epistaxis caused by internal blazing of evil fire, forcing the blood to move uncontrollably; or jaundice caused by internalized dampness-heat, chest plumpness and vexation (irritability and sullenness); or eye redness, swelling and pain, and soreness of the mouth and tongue due to the accumulation of heat and upward impulses. This formula is contraindicated in cases of blood loss due to yang deficiency and spleen’s inability to regulate blood. Qing Jin Resolving Phlegm Soup is used for treating cough due to fire, with dry and sore throat, red face, hot air coming out of the nose, and coughing phlegm that is difficult to come out, yellow and thick in color, or with blood, or with a fishy smell. If you have any of the above symptoms, it is recommended that you seek medical advice promptly. If you need medication, you should go through a doctor’s diagnosis and follow the doctor’s instructions for standardized treatment.
