Can swimming worsen the symptoms of Tourette’s Syndrome?

In the summer heat, many parents want to take their children to learn to swim. Tao Tao’s mother in order to let the 6-year-old son Tao Tao enhance physical fitness, by the way learn a motor skill, to Tao Tao enrolled in the summer swimming class. I did not expect that after the first swimming class, Tao Tao’s blinking, throat clearing symptoms more frequent, the amplitude is also getting bigger, but also appeared involuntary body shaking. Seeing that he was about to disappear the twitching symptoms all of a sudden all out. Tao Tao’s mother was very anxious and brought him to the clinic in a hurry. When she talked to other parents, she found out that some children with Tourette’s syndrome were fine after going swimming. So can children with Tourette’s syndrome swim or not? It is true that some children with Tourette’s syndrome have experienced a worsening of their tic symptoms after swimming, or even a very severe attack, or a relapse of symptoms that have been in remission for a long time. The reasons for this may be the following: 1. When the water temperature in the pool is low, the cold water acts as a cold stimulus and may aggravate the tics. 2. Tension is also a common trigger for tics, especially in children who are new to swimming and inevitably have internal tension and the fearful pressure that comes with being in the pool. 3, most children with tics are sensitive to their body sensations. If the eyes or nose accidentally enter the water or choke during swimming causing corresponding discomfort, it can also lead to twitching symptoms such as blinking, nasal aspiration and throat clearing. 4, the sudden increase in swimming exercise, children feel fatigue and discomfort, can also increase the twitch symptoms. 5, from the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, children’s internal organs are soft and weak, the spleen is often insufficient, and the lung guard is not solid. This is a kind of cold and damp evil that can easily invade the child’s body, and cause twitching by gathering dampness into phlegm and turning heat into depression, which disturbs the mind and moves the liver and wind inside. After understanding the causes, we understand why Tao Tao’s twitching symptoms increased after swimming, while some children with Tourette’s syndrome can swim as usual. If the child’s condition is stable and prevention is appropriate, swimming as a sport itself does not directly lead to the aggravation of tic symptoms. So what are the specific preventive measures? 1, in order to prevent cold water stimulation, try to pick a pool with appropriate water temperature, preferably an outdoor pool with afternoon sun. If the weather turns cool, it is not recommended to swim. 2, before swimming to carry out a suitable amount of warm-up exercise. 3, swimming attention to wear a good swimming cap and goggles, you can also wear a nose plug to prevent eyes, nose into the water. 4, according to your child’s physical, mental and physical strength, do not swim too tired, and do not soak in the water for too long, it is recommended that less than half an hour is appropriate. 5. Do not go swimming when tic symptoms are frequent, and if tic symptoms worsen after swimming, it is recommended to suspend.
