Moderator: In daily life, what are the signs that parents should be alerted that their children may have “Tourette’s syndrome”? Yanling Ren: The main symptoms of Tourette’s syndrome are twitching of motor muscles and twitching of vocal muscles, especially in the face. Parents often observe simple motor tics, such as squeezing the eyes, shrugging the nose, opening the mouth, tilting the mouth, shrugging the shoulders, nodding the head, and some large movements, such as flinging the hands, is also a simple motor tic. There are also complex motor tics such as jumping, squatting and standing up, and spitting on the hand and then wiping it on the table. Simple vocal tics are throat clearing, coughing, and imitating a barking dog. Complex vocal tics are less common, such as obscene language (swearing), and repetitive speech, in which a phrase is repeated over and over again, such as repeating a few simple words over and over again, Tourette’s syndrome is characterized by the above four types of symptoms.
