When does the fetus move in the first trimester

Fetal movement usually occurs at around 20 weeks of gestation for the first child, but there are individual variations. Fetal movement refers to the body movement of the fetus, and most pregnant women will be able to recognize it at around 20 weeks of pregnancy. Fetal movement increases with each week of pregnancy and is more active at night and in the afternoon. Generally, we should follow the doctor’s advice to count the fetal movements after 28 weeks of pregnancy to self-evaluate the intrauterine safety of the fetus, and the normal number of fetal movements is not less than 3-5 times per hour. However, there are individual differences in the timing of fetal movements. Proper counting of fetal movements during pregnancy is a simple, safe and effective method of self-assessment under the supervision of a doctor. After 28 weeks of gestation when the fetal movement count is less than 3 times/hour or when the fetal movement decreases by 50% there may be a risk of fetal hypoxia, which requires prompt hospitalization and ultrasound and fetal umbilical cord blood flow examination to assist in the diagnosis.
