What is a hypoechoic nodule in the liver?

Intrahepatic hypoechoic nodules is an ultrasound term for the ultrasound description of lesions found in the liver and is generally considered in two main categories, benign tumors including hepatic adenomas, focal nodular hyperplasia of the liver such as inflammatory pseudotumors and cirrhotic regenerative nodules, and malignant tumors including primary and secondary hepatocellular carcinoma, and hepatic sarcoma. Differential diagnosis and definitive diagnosis of hypoechoic nodules in the liver require further examinations, including ultrasonography, liver CT, MRI, and sometimes liver aspiration biopsy, which have to be combined with medical history including other laboratory tests to confirm the diagnosis. Therefore, the description of hypoechoic nodules by liver ultrasound alone is not complete and must be combined with medical history and laboratory tests to confirm the diagnosis.
