There is a relationship between hypertension and high IOP, and hypertension is a risk factor for elevated IOP, with the effects becoming more pronounced with age. The proportion of elderly patients with hypertension who develop elevated IOP increases significantly because hypertension causes cellular relaxation of the trabecular meshwork, increases in size, and increases resistance to atrial outflow raising IOP. In addition to hypertension, elevated IOP is also associated with a variety of other factors, such as diabetes, iritis, ciliary membrane inflammation, cataracts, high myopia, and glaucoma, which can all cause elevated IOP.
