What is an umbilical hernia? What should I do about umbilical hernia in children?

There are three different types of umbilical hernia, namely neonatal umbilical hernia, infant umbilical hernia, and adult umbilical hernia. 1. Neonatal umbilical hernia is due to congenital developmental abnormalities and can be detected at birth. 2.Infant umbilical hernia: It is the umbilical ring surrounding the umbilical cord. When the umbilical ring is large and the fibrous tissue is not tough enough when the baby is born, when the pressure in the abdominal cavity increases such as when the baby cries, the abdominal cavity is distended for a long time, coughing, etc., the intra-abdominal organs combined with the peritoneum pass through the ligament gap and protrude outside the umbilical ring, and an umbilical hernia is formed. It is a kind of congenital umbilical developmental defect disease, mainly manifested by the prolapse of the umbilical swelling in the shape of a hemisphere, which expands when the baby cries, and the skin and scar of the umbilicus are tense and slightly blue, and the swelling retracts or disappears when the baby sleeps quietly or lying down, leaving a loose fold in the umbilicus, and the enlarged and hard umbilical ring can be touched by probing with a finger, and when the contents of the hernia are returned The sound of air passing through water can be heard. 3. Adult umbilical hernia. What should I do about umbilical hernia in children? Infantile umbilical hernia is common in infants around 2 months of age and usually does not require surgical treatment. Most pediatric umbilical hernias can heal spontaneously within 2 years of age, and only a few cases require surgical treatment. Non-surgical treatment: After the hernia is retracted, a coin larger than the umbilical ring and covered with gauze is placed against the umbilical ring and fixed with a bandage with some elasticity to ensure that it will not move. You can also buy umbilical hernia belts, but they are not suitable for all children. It is better to buy a professional one that does not slide easily and has good treatment effect. It can be used continuously for 3 months. 2.Surgical treatment: If the diameter of the umbilical ring is more than 1.5cm when the baby is over 2 years old, or if the umbilical ring is still not closed when the baby is over 5 years old, emergency surgery is needed if the baby has an incarcerated hernia. Babies who cry suddenly and cannot be soothed need to be aware of the possibility of impaction. Surgical treatment is effective, with a good prognosis, few recurrences and few postoperative complications. 3. During the observation and waiting period, pay attention to whether the hernia ring continues to increase in size and whether symptoms such as pain and vomiting occur, which are indications for early surgery. Usually avoid strenuous exercise, crying and shouting, coughing and keeping bowel movement smooth. 4. When the hernia content adheres to the hernia sac, it can cause local pain, sometimes abdominal distension and vomiting, but less often it is embedded. The degree of umbilical hernia will gradually decrease with age, and most people do not need any treatment and wait for it to heal on its own. Only a few cases require surgical treatment. If there are adhesions between the hernia contents and the hernia sac or if there is a history of intussusception, surgery should be performed promptly. Non-surgical treatment should be performed to prevent pressure from damaging the thin umbilical tissues and leading to serious consequences.
