Puffiness of the upper eyelids can be seen as a result of spleen deficiency, but it can also be seen as a result of wind and water (sudden edema of the head, face and limbs) phimosis or spleen and kidney yang deficiency (deficiency of yang qi in the spleen and kidneys). The specific cause needs to be decided in conjunction with the patient’s other symptoms.
1. Puffy upper eyelids due to spleen deficiency: often accompanied by lethargy, yellowish face, weakness of limbs, loss of appetite, indigestion of food, abdominal pain, bowel sounds, loose stools (thin and unformed stools) or diarrhea, swelling, blood in stools, and menorrhagia (excessive or sporadic menstrual flow).
2. Swelling of the upper eyelids due to wind and water combat: often accompanied by swelling of the head and face of the eyelids first, followed by swelling of the whole body, swelling of the upper half of the body, rapid onset, thin and shiny skin, shortness of urine.
3. Upper eyelid swelling due to spleen and kidney yang deficiency: it is often accompanied by coldness (fear of cold, cold limbs), shortness of breath and laziness, body fatigue, loose stools or diarrhea (diarrhea before dawn), or swelling of the limbs, or even fullness and swelling of the abdomen, and so on.
