What is duodenal sludge?

Duodenal stasis is a clinical syndrome resulting from compensatory dilatation of the proximal part of the duodenal obstruction site and accumulation of food due to duodenal obstruction caused by a variety of reasons. There are many causes of duodenal sludge, with the majority being compression of the duodenum by the superior mesenteric artery, which is known as superior mesenteric artery syndrome. Other causes include congenital duodenal malformations, such as congenital peritoneal band extrusion and strains that obstruct the duodenum and then compress the duodenal lumen in and out of the duodenum, and can be seen in both benign and malignant duodenal tumors. Duodenal stasis is mainly characterized by nausea, vomiting of bile-like material, epigastric pain and abdominal distension, and often constipation. Patients who develop duodenal sludge are advised to seek medical attention promptly.
