Cetyl octadecanol acts as a lubricant; emulsifier; viscosity builder. Cetyl can be used as perfume, lubricant and pharmaceutical intermediates. Octadecanol or stearyl alcohol is a fatty alcohol with the chemical molecular formula CH3(CH2)16CH2OH.At room temperature, 1-octadecanol is a white fine grain or flake. It is insoluble in water and has low toxicity. It can be used as a raw material for lubricants, resins, perfumes and cosmetics, and is used in many ways as an emollient cream, emulsifier and thickener in ointments. The main use is used as a coloring agent for color film, a raw material for resins and synthetic rubber, often used in the production of surfactants, and also used in the production of drugs and cosmetics. Production Methods It can be produced by hydrolysis of giant whale oil, or by hydrogenation of stearic acid catalyzed by copper chromate, or by reduction of ethyl stearate with saturated ethanol. It can also be obtained from heptadecene fraction by controlled polymerization of ethylene in the presence of alkyl aluminum, and then by carbonyl synthesis to produce octadecanol.
