On August 27, 2014, a two-day visit to the China Center of Excellence in Pituitary Tumor kicked off at Shanghai Huashan Hospital (Shanghai Pituitary Tumor Center). More than 20 neurosurgery, endocrinology and gamma knife experts from all over China gathered at Shanghai Huashan Hospital, and through two days of observation, learning and discussion, they gained new understanding and gains on the treatment mode and clinical treatment of pituitary tumor diseases. Huashan Hospital won the praise and admiration of the participants with its perfect multidisciplinary cooperation model, advanced surgical techniques, and rich clinical experience in this event. The next part of the field visit was very enjoyable for the visiting experts. In this visit, there were four sessions: neurosurgery and endocrinology grand rounds, surgery observation, discussion of clinical hotspot issues and multidisciplinary joint outpatient observation.
The visiting experts were very interested in the “one-stop” patient management model of Huashan Hospital and asked Prof. Li Shiqi of Neurosurgery and Prof. Li Yiming of Endocrinology during the room visit how the two departments work closely together for preoperative evaluation and long-term postoperative follow-up, as well as the staff management and income distribution during the operation of the multidisciplinary cooperation model. In the session of discussing clinical hot issues, the multidisciplinary team of Huashan Hospital shared and exchanged with the visiting experts on hot topics such as clinical pathway of pituitary tumor treatment (acromegaly and Cushing’s disease), assessment and management of endocrine function after pituitary tumor surgery, management software and patient management model of pituitary tumor patients in Huashan Hospital, and progress of treatment of acromegaly and Cushing’s disease.
The visit to China Center of Excellence in Pituitary Tumor ended with the unfulfilled feeling of the visit. The visiting experts said they had learned practical experience and seen their own gaps and directions for improvement, and would take action to catch up after returning to the hospital. This observation activity helped doctors to observe, participate and communicate with each other from a zero distance, and stimulated them to take action in the multidisciplinary cooperation model.
