What causes high total bilirubin

The causes of high total bilirubin can be summarized as hepatocellular jaundice caused by hepatocellular injury, hemolytic jaundice caused by hemolysis, and obstructive jaundice caused by bile duct obstruction; total bilirubin is the sum of direct bilirubin and indirect bilirubin, with the value ranging from 3.4 to 17.1 μmol/L, and its main function is to accurately reflect the degree of jaundice.
1. Hepatocellular jaundice: mainly refers to the increase of total bilirubin due to hepatocellular damage caused by various kinds of hepatitis, including acute and chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis and so on.
2. Hemolytic jaundice: Hemolytic jaundice is commonly caused by autoimmune hemolysis and other hemolytic reactions.
3. Obstructive jaundice: Obstructive jaundice is caused by bile duct obstruction due to intra- and extra-hepatic bile duct stones, intra- and extra-hepatic bile duct inflammation, and tumors, resulting in poor bile discharge.
Therefore, when the total bilirubin is elevated, it is recommended to go to the hospital for systematic examination in time, and give targeted treatment for different causes, so as to avoid delaying the condition.
