The management process of needlestick injuries mainly includes wound treatment, reporting to the Infection Department (medical workers), and treatment for the infection source situation. 1. Wound treatment: squeeze the wound immediately after the needlestick injury occurs, so as to let the blood flow out and reduce the chance for germs to enter the bloodstream; rinse with running water after squeezing out the blood appropriately; and disinfect the wound with 0.5% iodophor. 2. Report to the Infection Department: If the needlestick injury occurs in a healthcare worker, it should be reported to the Infection Department of the hospital. Check the pre-transfusion test results of the needle user (i.e. the source of infection) or draw blood from the staff member for examination. 3. Treatment of the source of infection: If the source of infection is suffering from AIDS (HIV), the needled person should have blood drawn to check for HIV antibodies, take zidovudine, and be followed up regularly. If the source of infection has syphilis, the needled person should be injected with penicillin prophylactically. Needle-stick injuries occur mostly in the occupational exposure of medical workers and need to be handled with caution; needle-stick injuries in the general population can also be treated promptly.
