Toenail thickening may be caused by fungal infection, nail dystrophy, psoriasis, bad habits and other reasons.
1. Fungal infection: the most common cause of toenail is the occurrence of fungal infection such as dermatophyte, yeast, etc. Fungus leads to the thickening of the nail plate, and there may also be symptoms such as cloudy nail plate, separation, discoloration, atrophy, and uneven surface.
2. Nail dystrophy: Nail dystrophy has nothing to do with lack of nutrition, but mainly refers to changes in the shape, structure and texture of the nail plate, which can be manifested as thinning, roughness, thickening, brittleness and discoloration of the nail plate.
3. Psoriasis: Some psoriasis can involve the finger (toe) nails, which is manifested as punctate depression on the surface of the nail plate (thimble nails), and there can also be transverse grooves or longitudinal ridges of the nails, hyperkeratosis under the nails, and peeling of the nails, and so on.
4. Bad habits: wearing smaller shoes for a long time may also lead to symptoms of thickening of the nail plate at the extrusion site, which is a chronic injury.
Toenail thickening may also be caused by other factors, it is recommended that patients seek timely medical attention in order to clarify the cause of the symptomatic treatment.
