With the current medical conditions and personal care methods available, it is unlikely that a patient will be able to remove calculus completely at home by themselves. It is important to note that calculus exists on the tooth surface as well as in the gingival sulcus, where plaque is deposited layer by layer over a long period of time, and will be very firmly attached to the tooth surface, especially within the gingival sulcus. A professional dentist must be able to see it and apply specialized materials to clean it. The usual way of brushing the teeth does not allow you to brush down the tartar that is firmly attached to the tooth surface. In addition, there is a large portion of tartar that is attached to the gingival sulcus, and even though it can be physically removed, it is certainly not possible to remove all of the tartar with the application of tools.
