How long does it take for absorbable sutures to absorb

Absorbable sutures vary in absorption time depending on the material and manufacturer, with most absorbing within 1-6 months. The earliest absorbable sutures were sheep’s intestines, which were absorbed within 1 month. Nowadays, absorbable sutures are synthetic materials. The absorption time may be relatively fast inside the abdominal cavity due to better blood circulation, and if the suture is made in the subcutaneous tissue or subcutaneous fat layer, the absorption time is on the longer side due to relatively poor blood supply. Absorbable sutures can also sometimes produce severe knot reaction, manifested as oozing at the incision, while threads may bubble up. If necessary, absorbable sutures should be completely removed, followed by wound dressing, and then re-sutured at a later stage when the wound has healed well.
