Breast milk is the best food for babies, strengthening their immune system and preventing the development of chronic diseases such as diabetes in the distant future. Breastfeeding can also promote the recovery of the mother’s uterus and prevent the occurrence of breast cancer in mothers. The World Health Organization and UNICEF recommend that babies be exclusively breastfed for the first six months, and then continue breastfeeding until two years of age or older with the addition of complementary foods. If your baby is unfortunately hospitalized due to an illness and cannot stay with the mother, or if there is a surplus of breast milk. We recommend you to collect, store and transfer breast milk as follows: 1. Breast milk collection (1) Sterile disposable milk storage bags or bottles can be used. After each use, the bottle should be washed thoroughly under running water and then boiled with cold water for 15-20 minutes, then taken out and dried. (2) Wash your hands and clean the mother’s breasts before breast pumping, then suck out the milk with a sterilized breast pump and put it into a sterilized bottle or a disposable sterile milk storage bag. (3) The frequency of breast pumping depends on the mother’s specific situation, at least 8 times a day, 10 to 15 minutes for one breast, and use one storage container for each sucked milk, not several times in one container. 2. Breast milk storage (1) Label the container with breast milk with the baby’s name, storage month, day and time; put the sucked out milk into the refrigerator as soon as possible; breast milk that can be fed within 24 hours should be kept in the refrigerator freezer (3-4℃); those kept for more than 24 hours should be put into the freezer (-18℃) for freezing. (2) Breast milk placed in the refrigerator freezer can be kept for 3 months. When you use it, take out the frozen breast milk and thaw it at room temperature, then warm it up with warm water (30-37℃) and feed it directly. 3.Breast milk delivery You can send the collected breastmilk to the ward for your baby to eat during the baby’s hospitalization. Before leaving home, take the container of milk from the refrigerator, put it in the insulated bucket, place ice around it to maintain the frozen state, and deliver it to the hospital as soon as possible to the medical staff. 4. Special attention: (1) The whole process from milking to storage, transportation and feeding should be aseptic. (2) The refrigerator for breast milk storage must be in good condition. (3) Frozen breast milk must be consumed within 24 hours. (4) Thawed breastmilk should be consumed for one meal only and should not be consumed again or frozen. (5) If you can insist on delivering breast milk to the ward every day, please do so from 8:00am-12:00pm or 14:30-17:20pm.
