Comminuted fractures cannot be considered major surgery, and generally comminuted fractures and simple fractures are operated on in a similar way, with surgical excision and internal fixation. Comminuted fractures may take longer to perform, and the surgery may take more time to reposition the articular surfaces and sometimes require bone grafting. Postoperative recovery may take longer than for simple fractures, and the healing of the surgical incision, which in some cases may be localized, may be poor, all due to soft tissue damage during comminuted fractures. But in any case, comminuted and simple fractures are currently done in hospitals in a very large number of surgical cases and are not considered to be major surgery.
