The treatment of hyperthyroidism with protruding eyes includes active treatment of the primary disease, as well as symptomatic treatment.
1. Active treatment of the primary disease: can take propylthiouracil, methimazole and other anti-thyroid drugs to reduce the synthesis of thyroid hormones, relieve the symptoms of hyperthyroidism, if necessary, can be treated by iodine 131 or surgery.
2. Symptomatic treatment: benign synophthalmos can be treated by hyperthyroidism, and the synophthalmos can be improved after controlling the symptoms, and the patients will not be transitioned to malignant synophthalmos. Malignant infiltrative proptosis requires specialized treatment, and its course of treatment is longer.
Mild proptosis is usually treated with basic treatment, and local protection can be taken, such as applying eye ointment, wearing eye shields and other treatments; in addition to basic treatment for moderate to severe proptosis, glucocorticosteroid treatment should be applied according to different conditions of the patient; when the optic nerve of the patient is affected, it is feasible to use orbital decompression surgery, posterior spherical radiotherapy, growth inhibitors and their analogues, and extra-ocular muscle surgery can make the patient’s eyeball restore its movement.
The above drugs should be used under the guidance of a physician, and it is recommended that patients go to the endocrinology department of a regular hospital for detailed consultation.
