When you have a fever, the easiest way to take your temperature is to use an ear thermometer, because there are many factors that affect ear temperature, such as the outside temperature and whether one side of the child’s ear is pressed against the clothing, or one ear is pressed down when sleeping, all of which may cause the temperature of the two ears to be different. In fact, even for the same ear, because of the machine’s margin of error, there may be some difference in temperature between the two measurements within a short period of time, but the difference should not be too great and a high value can be taken to determine how many degrees the baby’s temperature is. If the difference between the two temperatures is more, and one ear temperature is always higher, then exclude that the higher temperature ear is not an inflammatory condition, such as otitis media, etc.
