Blood pressure 148/96, do I need to take medication?

Patients with blood pressure of 148/96 mmHg and without cardiovascular disease can first lower their blood pressure through general treatment, while patients with cardiovascular disease or still high blood pressure after general treatment should be treated with medication as prescribed by the doctor.
Normal blood pressure in adults is 90~139/60~89 mmHg, and if the systolic blood pressure is 140~159 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure is 90~99 mmHg in three measurements taken on non-same day, it can be diagnosed as grade 1 hypertension. The patient can follow the doctor’s advice to control blood pressure by lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking and drinking, reducing sodium and fat intake, physical exercise, weight control, regular work and rest, and keeping a happy mood.
If the patient is combined with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases or the blood pressure is still high after general treatment, the patient needs to follow the doctor’s instructions for drug treatment, such as the application of diuretics (e.g., hydrochlorothiazide), β-blockers (e.g., metoprolol), calcium channel blockers (e.g., nifedipine), and other antihypertensive drugs to actively control the blood pressure, in order to reduce the damage of hypertension to the heart, the brain and other target organs.
Patients with elevated blood pressure should go to the hospital in a timely manner, under the guidance of the doctor for standardized treatment, so as not to delay the condition, resulting in adverse consequences, the drug should be used under the guidance of the physician.
