Explaining the major questions after iodine-131 treatment

  1. To ensure the full absorption of iodine-131, iodine-131 should be taken on an empty stomach for more than 3 hours, and food should be allowed only 2 hours after taking iodine-131. 2.Low iodine diet within 2 weeks after taking iodine-131, as long as there is no critical signs, iodine bromine preparation (including iodine-containing Chinese medicine) is prohibited. 3. Stop infection, avoid mental stimulation and strenuous activities, and provide timely symptomatic treatment. Special attention should be paid to the management of the “aura phase” of critical symptoms. For severe hyperthyroidism, additional anti-thyroid drugs can be administered 24 or 48 hours after iodine administration if necessary. In combination with periodic paralysis or muscle weakness, potassium chloride should be continued. 4. For severe proptosis, prednisone 20-40 mg/day or dexamethasone 4.5-9 mg/day should be given immediately after iodine administration, and the dosage should be gradually reduced after 1 month and discontinued after 3 months. To improve proptosis and prevent aggravation. 5. Ask the patient to come to the hospital for follow-up review in 3 months for early detection of hypothyroidism. For asymptomatic or mild symptoms are not treated, regular follow-up is required to wait for their recovery. For patients with more obvious symptoms of hypothyroidism, they can be given Eugenol replacement therapy. When TSH is increased in patients with proptosis, thyroid preparations should be applied promptly and appropriately to keep TSH at the low limit of normal to prevent aggravation of proptosis.
