Inappropriate contraceptive measures predispose to gestational diabetes

Gestational diabetes is the great enemy of today’s society, especially of pregnant women in our cities! There are many causes of gestational diabetes, but there is one cause that must be taken seriously. A study by American gestational diabetes researchers showed that women who had taken hormonal contraceptives had a 40% higher risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) compared to women who had not used contraception. The researchers analyzed data from 2,741 pregnancies to determine whether previous contraceptive use had an effect on the risk of gestational diabetes. The results of this gestational diabetes study showed that women who had used hormonal contraception had a 43% higher risk of gestational diabetes than women who had not used contraception (p < 0.001). In addition, the risk of gestational diabetes was higher in women 30 years of age or older than in women younger than 20 years of age ((p < 0.001). Other factors that increased the risk of gestational diabetes included a higher risk for women with adequate prenatal visits than for women with inadequate or interrupted prenatal visits, and a higher risk for women who were overweight or obese before pregnancy than for women with a normal BMI, as well as a higher risk for gestational diabetes among women with a high school education or higher. Another exciting message from this gestational diabetes study is that women who use barrier contraception (such as condoms or spermicide) have an even lower risk of gestational diabetes than women who do not use contraception. The prevalence of gestational diabetes continues to rise in our cities, with obesity, older age, high stress levels, and genetics all contributing factors to gestational diabetes. A combination of regular specialist consultations and daily management care by a competent physician, with close collaboration between endocrinologists and gynecologists and exercise specialists, is the best way to effectively control and reverse gestational diabetes and stop it from developing into a lifelong chronic disease.
