What to do if your newborn has high jaundice on the third day

Jaundice in newborns after the third day of life can be categorized into physiological jaundice and pathological jaundice. Physiological jaundice can recover by itself, while pathological jaundice needs treatment.
1. Physiological jaundice: it is jaundice that belongs to normal condition and is a physiological phenomenon. It usually appears within 2 to 3 days after birth and reaches the peak in about 5 days, and will subside naturally in 7 to 10 days, not exceeding 2 weeks at the latest. Generally no special treatment is needed.
2. Pathological jaundice: caused by various pathological factors, such as neonatal hepatitis. Jaundice appears in less than 24 hours after birth. If the serum bilirubin value is more than 17.5mg/dL on the 3rd day of life, light treatment is needed. Some children progress more severely and need to be treated with a combination of blood products such as immunoglobulins and albumin. Blood exchange therapy is needed if necessary.
It is necessary to go to the hospital for examination to avoid delay. All of the above medications should be used under the guidance of a doctor, avoid self-medication.
