Breast cancer is the number one common malignancy among women. As the number one killer of women’s health, the incidence and growth rate of breast cancer is increasing year by year and tends to be younger. Jin Jihai, a breast cancer specialist from the Department of General Surgery of the People’s Hospital, said, “There are many factors that trigger breast cancer, such as air pollution, high-fat diet, work pressure, fast-paced life, etc.” Regarding self-examination, Jin Jihai said that the best time for self-examination is 7-10 days after menstruation. The first step is to observe whether there are any changes in the skin around the breast, such as eczema, and the second step is to check whether there is any sunken skin, similar to the shape of dimples, and also to observe whether the nipples are sunken, all of these features are warnings of breast cancer. The second step is to touch the breast to see if you can feel a lump that is hard as a stone and can move. The strength of the touch is also important, with light pressure on the upper part of the breast, and more and more pressure from the middle down to feel the deeper tissues until the rib cage is touched. Jin also introduced that not only the breast itself needs attention, but also the lymph nodes around it are the key targets to be touched, starting from the neck, to the upper and lower clavicle, then to the armpit, both left and right sides, because this is the place where breast cancer is most likely to metastasize. Finally, squeeze the nipple with moderate force to see if there is any overflow. Jin Jihai said that women who have their first menstruation before the age of 14 and menopause after the age of 50 have a higher chance of breast cancer; in addition, women who have late childbirth and are not breastfeeding also have a higher chance of breast cancer, which should be noticed. Breast cancer can be detected through self-examination, but this is already a symptom of the middle stage of breast cancer, and the initial symptoms of breast cancer are not easily detected through self-examination. Jin Jihai said, “The golden combination of breast ultrasound and mammography can make breast cancer invisible.” Breast ultrasound can distinguish lumps of more than 3 mm, while mammography can detect the malignant trait of breast tumor – calcified shield. However, mammography uses soft x-rays and therefore contains a small amount of radioactivity. It is not recommended for women under the age of 40 to have mammography to detect breast cancer. However, for women who have a family history of breast cancer, it is recommended to use the “golden combination” for breast screening. For women who have a family history of breast cancer, the “golden combination” is recommended. If breast cancer is unfortunately detected, please don’t panic. Jin Jihai said, “Early breast cancer has a high cure rate and early detection can be done with breast-conserving surgery, which is less invasive and has good results.” Breast-conserving surgery preserves the integrity of breast shape while taking into account the functional recovery after surgery, and with comprehensive postoperative treatment, the efficacy can be comparable to radical breast cancer surgery. The treatment of mid-stage breast cancer is mainly based on modified radical treatment plus chemotherapy and radiotherapy, through total excision of the breast and lymph node dissection in the axilla, together with chemotherapy and radiotherapy to achieve the goal of radical treatment. Since breast cancer is a superficial tumor, 90% of the superficial tumors are very sensitive to chemotherapy drugs, so the cure rate of mid-stage breast cancer is still very high. Jin Jihai introduced, “Breast-conserving surgery can also be done for mid-stage breast cancer, and there is no difference in overall survival rate compared to total excision, and it is still too late to have total excision again if local recurrence occurs.” In Yao’s case, Jin said, “The younger she is, the more likely she is to have a recurrence, and Yao was 30 years old when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, which is a young case.” Jin then added that breast cancer is still highly curable in the early stage, over 90%, but Yao’s breast cancer is an isolated case, accounting for about 5%. Jin Jihai suggested that if people want to prevent breast cancer, they should do a good self-examination and check-up at the same time, develop good habits, adjust the rhythm of life, keep a good mood, adhere to physical exercise, keep a calm mind, and at the same time develop a good diet, and should actively treat breast diseases when they are found, not to avoid treatment.
