Can acupuncture release treat osteoarthritis of the knee?

Osteoarthritis of the knee, also known as osteoarthropathy, degenerative arthritis and proliferative arthritis, is a common and frequent clinical disease. It is a chronic joint disease characterized by degeneration and destruction of articular cartilage and osteophytes. It is characterized by progressive degeneration, exfoliation, and loss of articular cartilage, formation of bony redundancy at the joint edge and hardening of subchondral bone tissue, with the rate of degeneration exceeding the rate of repair and regeneration, leading to loss of function. The main clinical manifestations are knee joint pain, weakness, restricted movement, popping and joint swelling and fluid accumulation, resulting in difficulties in walking, standing and climbing stairs, increased pain after activity and weight-bearing, alleviated after rest, and morning stiffness and sticking phenomenon, which seriously affects the patient’s daily life. It has the function of both acupuncture and scalpel cutting. It is based on the theory of balance of yin and yang and the dialectical treatment of “yin and yang are secret, spirit is cure” of traditional Chinese medicine, and combined with the research results of modern biomechanics. The treatment is based on the theory of balance between yin and yang in traditional Chinese medicine and the theory of dialectical treatment. The knee joint is free to move within the limits of normal activity. When osteoarthritis occurs in the knee joint, destruction of articular cartilage, osteophytes and cystic changes, adhesions, scarring and contractures of the ligaments and muscles around the joint limit the free movement of the knee joint, resulting in an imbalance in the dynamic balance of the knee joint. We find the adhesions, scars and contractures around the affected knee, mainly around the patella and the medial and lateral collateral ligaments, and perform longitudinal sparing with acupuncture and horizontal peeling to release the adhesions, scars and contractures of the soft tissues around the knee joint, and restore the internal balance of the joint, achieving “both opening and loosening” and “balance of yin and yang”. The purpose of “balance of yin and yang” is to provide good conditions for the repair of articular cartilage and to restore the dynamic balance of knee joint mechanics to a certain extent.
