What causes shortness of breath?

Shortness of breath can be caused by a variety of reasons, commonly found in mental tension, strenuous exercise and other physiological factors, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart failure and other pathologic factors.
1. Physiological factors:
(1) Mental stress: if the impact of mental stress such as anxiety, depressed mood can also cause shortness of breath, chest tightness and other symptoms. Generally, it can be relieved by itself after rest.
(2) Strenuous exercise: under normal circumstances, shortness of breath, panic, fatigue and other symptoms can also occur after strenuous exercise. It can be relieved by itself after rest.
2. Pathologic factors:
(1) Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): it can be caused by environmental factors such as smoking, dust, air pollution and other factors, as well as the body’s own factors such as heredity, which lead to an increase in airway resistance in the lungs, and continuous airflow restriction. Its clinical manifestations are chronic cough, cough sputum with shortness of breath, chest tightness, dyspnea and other symptoms.
(2) Heart failure: mainly due to myocardial diastolic and systolic dysfunction, overloading of the heart and other factors affecting the heart pumping, insufficient cardiac output, difficult to maintain the body’s tissue metabolism cycle and circulatory dysfunction caused by the disease. Its main manifestations are dyspnea, shortness of breath, and limitation of physical activity.
