The purpose of holding the urine is to fill the bladder sufficiently so that the urinary tract, as well as the uterus and adnexa, can be visualized more clearly during abdominal ultrasound examinations, such as examinations of the bladder, prostate, and uterine adnexa. It is usually sufficient to fill the bladder well, i.e., the patient should feel the urge to urinate, and not to overfill it. However, there are some abdominal examinations that do not require holding urine, such as the examination of the liver, gallbladder, spleen and pancreas, which not only do not require holding urine, but also need to be in a state of fasting in order to carry out the examination.
