4-month-old infants usually do not expel phlegm on their own. If phlegm is present, it can be removed by changing the position, or by maneuvering, or by using medication.
1. Changing position: A pillow can be used as a flat surface, and the pillow can be placed at an incline of about 20-30 degrees, lying on the pillow in a prone or side-lying position, with the head in a low and feet high position. Different positions can be maintained for about 5 minutes.
2. Manipulation of phlegm: The above positions can be combined with manipulation of phlegm, or the baby can be placed prone on the legs. One hand protects the baby from falling, one hand arches the back of the hand, five fingers together in the shape of a pinch ball, and gently pats the back with the palm, which part of the cough is more intense and which part may be the place where the phlegm accumulates.
3. Medications: You can use children’s cough and phlegm medications, such as Ambroxol hydrochloride.
Note that in the process of helping to expel phlegm, we must always pay attention to the baby’s condition, if there is shortness of breath or suffocation must be stopped immediately, if the baby swallowed the phlegm is not too worried.
The above methods and medications should be used under the guidance of a medical professional.
