A blood pressure of 180/120 mmHg ideally requires hospitalization because this type of hypertension is a grade 3 hypertension, also called severe hypertension, and is at risk for serious cardiovascular events. This type of hypertension needs to be treated as soon as possible to gradually bring the blood pressure under control in the target range. The purpose of hospitalization is also to allow for a comprehensive examination of the patient’s general condition, including whether the patient has other cardiovascular risk factors, whether secondary hypertension exists, whether target organ damage and comorbidities of hypertension exist, and whether diabetes is present, in order to stratify the patient for risk. A more complete long-term treatment plan is also developed based on the patient’s overall condition.
