Is it normal for newborns to have gray eyes?

Grayish whites of the eyes in newborns is something that is generally normal. Grayish dark eyeballs in newborns may or may not be normal.
The walls of the newborn’s eyes tend to be thin and reveal the color of the uvea, so the white area of the eye can appear gray from the outside. As the scleral wall thickens with age, the white area of the eye becomes progressively whiter.
Gray eyes in newborns can be normal, mostly caused by a congenital iris with less pigment. There are also possibilities that it is abnormal, such as: congenital iris pigmentation abnormality, or cloudy transparent cornea due to keratitis, trauma and other eye diseases.
When a newborn presents with gray eyes, parents are advised to bring him/her to the doctor promptly for a clear diagnosis.
