What is the structure of the female urethra?

The length of the female urethra is usually 3-5 cm and its diameter is about 0.6 cm. The female urethra is characterized by its exclusive function of urination and is shorter, straighter, and wider than the male urethra. The internal urethral opening is positioned approximately flush with the center of the back of the pubic symphysis. The female urethra travels anteriorly and inferiorly, passes through the urogenital diaphragm, and opens into the vaginal vestibule.
The opening of the female urethra is wrapped by the labia majora, and the external urethral opening is located approximately 2-2.5 cm anterior to the vaginal opening and posterior to the clitoris. The urethral opening is relatively close to the vaginal opening, and is round in shape and approximately 4 mm in diameter. It is generally pink in color and extends inward. At the lower end of the female urethra there are paraurethral glands whose ducts open around the urethra.
