What happened to the white discharge from the newborn’s pubic area

Newborn baby girls often have white mucus flowing out of their diapers and vaginal opening, which is called “leucorrhea”. In addition, a small number of female babies have a bleeding vaginal discharge for 3-7 days after birth, which usually lasts for 3-5 days and resembles menstruation, and is referred to as “pseudomenstruation”. This kind of leukorrhea and pseudo-menstruation is due to the endometrium and vaginal mucosa of the fetus, which are stimulated by the mother’s estrogen in the second trimester of pregnancy, and the estrogen from the mother increases the vaginal discharge and the endometrium of the newborn. When the fetus is born, the influence of the mother’s hormones on the fetus is interrupted and the level of estrogen decreases, then a small amount of discharge will flow out, which is similar to the leucorrhoea and menstruation of adults. When you clean your newborn’s vulva, just wipe it dry gently, don’t wipe it hard, don’t wash it with overly hot water, it will bring unnecessary stimulation to the tender mucous membrane of the vulva. There is also no need to panic, you can take your child to the clinic, if the discharge is yellow, green or smelly, you must be alert to possible co-infection.
