Rhubarb in wine is used for swollen eyes and throat, swollen gums and pain, while raw rhubarb is used for constipation with solid heat. Rhubarb is bitter in taste, cold in nature, and belongs to the spleen, stomach, large intestine, liver and pericardium meridians. It has the effects of diarrhea (treating constipation by passing stools), clearing away heat and fire, cooling the blood and detoxifying the toxin, expelling blood stasis and clearing the meridians, promoting diuresis to relieve yellowish coloration (eliminating dampness and eliminating jaundice). Adverse effects of Rhubarb are not known. Use with caution during pregnancy, menstruation and lactation. It is bitter and cold, and should be used with caution in weak spleen and stomach. Raw rhubarb is more effective in cathartic effect and is used in conjunction with manganese nitrate, citrus aurantium dulcis, thick park and other traditional Chinese medicines for the treatment of low afternoon fever, thirst, navel distension, hard and painful, dry and knotty stools, confusion, and other signs of yangmings viscera solidity.
