Causes of otolaryngodermal keloids

Keloid scars are the most specific type of keloid scar. It can be caused by a small injury and can grow in size, extending beyond the site of the injury. It is often high on the surface of the skin, reddish in color and hard in texture, hence the name “crab foot swelling”.

The reasons for this are many: First, it is related to the scarring of the person’s body. This type of person is prone to develop visible scarring on the chest – neck, upper arms, etc. Even family members can often develop scarring. The same condition can often be found even in members of their family. In fact, large keloids in the earlobes tend to find the same lesions in other parts of their body as well.

The second is related to the surgical operation. If the operation is not done properly, bacteria or foreign bodies are brought into the wound and the wound is repeatedly infected and does not heal, keloids are likely to develop.

In addition, studies have shown that the nickel needle used for ear piercing or certain metal earrings themselves can produce localized contact dermatitis in the case of epidermal damage to the ear hole, prompting the creation of keloids.

Since ear piercing can cause these lesions, those who wish to pierce their ears and wear earrings should think twice before doing so. If you are a keloid, you should avoid piercing your ears and opt for clip-on earrings. Alternatively, place non-metallic materials that are not easily allergic after the ear piercing, and then replace them with regular earrings after the trauma has healed. If you develop a keloid after ear piercing, you should visit the hospital early and your doctor will decide on the treatment method to be used based on the specific situation.

In general, certain hormonal drugs can be injected into the scar to inhibit its continued growth in mild cases, while in severe cases, complete surgical excision, post-operative hormone injections or radiation therapy are feasible to prevent its recurrence to the maximum extent possible.
