Is the headache a new type of coronavirus pneumonia?

A small number of patients with novel coronavirus pneumonia, especially in severe cases, may have headaches, but headaches are not necessarily caused by novel coronavirus pneumonia. The presence of headache should also be evaluated in conjunction with the epidemiologic history and other symptoms. If there is a history of exposure to a confirmed infected person with unexplained headache, it is important to consider the possibility that the headache is caused by novel coronavirus pneumonia, and routine blood and throat swab nucleic acid testing are recommended for evaluation. If there is a complete absence of epidemiologic history symptoms and only a headache without fever or cough, the headache should not be related to novel coronavirus pneumonia. If symptoms of pain are not relieved after rest, it is recommended that a neurologist be consulted in the hospital for evaluation and, if necessary, a CT of the head to clarify the diagnosis. If fever and cough symptoms are present, blood test and chest CT are needed for evaluation. If pneumonia changes are seen on chest CT with a ground glass shadow, viral pneumonia is considered and another nucleic acid test should be done to consider the headache as caused by novel coronavirus pneumonia. If there are no respiratory symptoms presenting only as a headache, consider other causes. Source: Dr. Yurai
