Do you have to fast in the morning for a uric acid test?

The measurement of blood uric acid requires an early morning fasting period of at least eight hours. The diagnosis of hyperuricemia is a fasting blood uric acid level of >420 μmol/L on two occasions not on the same day under a daily diet, and only the blood uric acid level measured in the fasting state can be used to determine whether or not hyperuricemia is present. In addition, strict fasting of purine-rich foods for 3 days to exclude exogenous uric acid interference, the test results are more meaningful. The treatment of hyperuricemia includes general treatment and drug treatment. General treatment refers to controlling the total calories in the diet, limiting the consumption of alcohol and purine-rich foods (such as animal offal and seafood), and drinking more than two liters of water per day to increase the excretion of uric acid. Pharmacological treatment refers to the use of drugs such as benzbromarone and probenecid to promote uric acid excretion and/or allopurinol and febuxostat to inhibit uric acid production. If patients are found to have hyperuricemia during examination, it is recommended that they follow the doctor’s instructions for treatment and do not take medication on their own.
