Can the sound of a cough tell you what’s wrong?

The sound of cough alone cannot determine the condition, but the cough of some diseases may have certain characteristics, combined with the symptoms accompanying the cough to help determine the condition, such as cough accompanied by hoarseness, chicken-like cough, and coughing with a low voice weakness, and so on. 1. Cough accompanied by hoarseness: it is mostly seen in the inflammation of the vocal cords or tumors compressing the vocal cords, and it may also be caused by lung cancer and other diseases leading to the compression of the recurrent laryngeal nerve. 2. Coughing like chicken: it may be seen in whooping cough, pharyngitis and so on. 3. Cough with a low, weak sound: common in patients with severe emphysema or extreme debility. In addition, many coughs are not very characteristic and need to be evaluated in conjunction with other clinical features of the patient.
