Cancer can occur in some cases of cholecystitis, which is related to the duration, frequency, and severity of the cholecystitis. If cholecystitis persists for a long time, or is repeated, and the degree of edema and necrosis of the inflammation is also more serious, then the phenomenon of gallbladder cancer may occur. If cholecystitis persists for more than 10 years or repeated infections without thorough treatment, the inflammation will destroy the normal tissues of the gallbladder, leading to necrosis or atrophy of the gallbladder. After repeated destruction and proliferation of gallbladder tissues, abnormal metaplasia, i.e., regeneration of cancer cells and cancerous transformation, will easily occur. If the degree of inflammation of cholecystitis is mild, or if treatment is given immediately after the appearance of cholecystitis, it is not easy to develop cancer. It is recommended that patients with cholecystitis should go to the hospital in time and receive treatment under the doctor’s guidance, so that they will not be prone to cancer.
