What lesions can be detected by barium meal imaging of the small intestine

Small bowel barium meal imaging can detect intestinal tuberculosis, small bowel polyps, small bowel tumors and other diseases. 1. Intestinal tuberculosis: barium meal contrast can show “jumping” sign, which is manifested as barium can not stay in the ulcer, jumping to the distal intestinal tube quickly, and there is no barium filling in the ulcer. 2. Small intestinal polyps: Small intestinal polyps are usually difficult to find. For larger small bowel polyps, small bowel barium meal contrast shows round or oval barium filling defects, and polyp shadows can be seen on lateral observation. 3. Small bowel tumor: small bowel barium meal contrast shows mucosal damage, narrowing of intestinal tube, niche shadow, stiffness of small bowel wall, poor peristalsis, and so on. After doing small bowel barium meal imaging, these diseases need to be combined with other tests for further diagnosis, such as abdominal CT, enteroscopy and so on.
