Why do I have hypertension?

China is a relatively large wine consuming country and also has a wine culture of more than 2000 years. Traditional Chinese medicine states that wine can promote blood circulation, open the meridians, dispel rheumatism, and relieve rheumatic paralysis and pain. However, with the increase in modern research, more studies have confirmed that alcohol intake is more harmful to the human body and that long-term alcohol intake can lead to a variety of diseases including cancer, fatty liver, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, etc. This article will focus on the relationship between alcohol and hypertension. Excessive alcohol consumption is a risk factor for the development of hypertension, and the prevalence of hypertension in the population increases with the amount of alcohol consumed. Although blood pressure decreases for a short period of time after a small amount of alcohol is consumed, a small amount of alcohol consumed over a long period of time can cause a mild increase in blood pressure; excessive alcohol consumption can cause a significant increase in blood pressure. If the average daily alcohol consumption is >3 standard glasses (1 standard glass is equivalent to 12 grams of alcohol, which is about 360 grams of beer, or 100 grams of wine, or 30 grams of liquor), the systolic and diastolic blood pressure increases by 3.5 mmHg and 2.1 mmHg, respectively, and the increase in blood pressure increases with the amount of alcohol consumed. In China, some men with hypertension have a long-term habit of drinking alcohol and strong alcohol, and the effect of long-term excessive alcohol consumption on blood pressure and the occurrence of hypertension should be taken seriously. Alcohol consumption also reduces the efficacy of antihypertensive therapy, and excessive alcohol consumption can induce acute cerebral hemorrhage or myocardial infarction. Some studies have shown that limiting the amount of alcohol consumed significantly reduces the risk of developing hypertension. Long-term heavy alcohol consumption is more common among men in China. All investigators should control the amount of alcohol consumed. Daily alcohol intake should not exceed 25 g for men and 15 g for women. alcohol is not recommended for patients with hypertension, and if it is consumed, it should be in small amounts: less than 50 ml of white wine, 100 ml of wine (or rice wine) and 300 ml of beer. Finally, according to the 2018 Global Report on Alcohol and Health published by the World Health Organization (WHO), the report states that about 3 million people worldwide die each year from alcohol consumption. The report states that about 3 million people die from alcohol consumption each year, accounting for 5.3% of all deaths; on average, 1 in 20 deaths is due to alcohol consumption, and men account for 3/4 of alcohol-related deaths. 6 deaths per minute are due to alcohol consumption. Six percent of men and one percent of women residents in China died from alcohol-related diseases. It is particularly noteworthy that alcohol consumption is more harmful to young people, with 13.5% of alcohol-related deaths in this age group between 20 and 29 years old. For everyone, therefore, minimizing alcohol intake will play an important role in maintaining good health.
