How long to put a cast on a fracture

The fracture needs to be immobilized in a cast for 4-6 weeks, and the fracture will form a primary bone scab at about 3 weeks. After 3-4 weeks of resorption, the primary scab will be dense enough to resist the weight of the body and minor movements such as rotation of the joint to ensure that the fracture does not become dislocated. If immobilization is prolonged, it can lead to adhesions and stiffness around the joint, which can interfere with peri-articular function. Therefore, in order to ensure that the fracture does not displace and does not affect the joint movement, it is normal to fix the fracture in a cast for 4-6 weeks, and to perform appropriate muscle function exercises during the casting process to prevent complications such as deep vein thrombosis and muscle atrophy.
