Infant Heimlich maneuver

Infant Heimlich Maneuver is a first aid method for infants who are unable to breathe due to a foreign body blocking their airway.

Usually, infants with foreign body inhalation will show signs of airway obstruction and distress such as flushing, bruising of lips and nail beds, inability to breathe, and grasping the neck with both hands. The four steps of first aid are as follows:

1. The rescuer fixes the infant’s head with one hand, turns the infant’s face downward, keeps the head low and feet high, and knocks the root of the palm of the other hand at the midpoint of the scapula line for 5 times in a row.

2. Turn the baby over to face up, still keeping the head low and feet high, and check whether there is any foreign body discharged from the mouth.

3. If no foreign body is found to be discharged, the rescuer immediately presses the midpoint of the nipple line between the two nipples of the child with the middle and forefinger 5 times.

4. Repeat the above steps until the foreign body is discharged.
