The recovery time of hemifacial palsy is related to the type of facial paralysis, usually the recovery time is between 2 weeks to 6 months, or even lifelong in severe cases.
1. Central facial nerve paralysis: It can cause facial paralysis of the lower 1/4 of the contralateral face. It is characterized by the crooked corners of the mouth, but the frontal lines are normal and opening and closing of the eyes are not affected. It is mainly caused by stroke, brain tumor and other diseases. It is usually caused by lesions in the cortical motor area and internal capsule area. Usually after active treatment of the primary disease 2~4 weeks can be improved, and 3~4 months can be completely recovered.
If the primary disease is more serious and the treatment is not effective, it may take more than 6 months or even permanent recovery.
2. Peripheral facial nerve palsy: Usually the degree of facial paralysis is more severe, manifested by abnormal movement of all expression muscles on the same side of half of the face. It can be seen as disappearance of frontal lines, weakness of eyelid closure, disappearance of nasolabial folds, etc. In mild cases, it can be seen within 2 weeks. Mild cases can start to recover within 2 weeks and return to normal in about 2 months. In severe cases, the recovery period can be more than 6 months or even lifelong.
When the symptoms of hemifacial palsy appear, it is recommended to go to the hospital in time for early and standardized treatment to avoid delaying the best time for treatment.
