In patients with severe overcrowding or facial protrusion, extraction is necessary to align the teeth, or to recede the front teeth backwards to change the outward facial profile. There is no gap at the end of the orthodontic treatment. There is no need to worry about the impact of extractions on chewing function because straighter teeth are healthier, easier to clean, and less prone to periodontal disease and dental caries (insects). Straighter teeth have more contact area when biting and chew more efficiently! Extractions are performed under local anesthesia and are basically painless, except for a little pain when the anesthetic is administered!
