Is a bowel obstruction serious?

Simple intestinal obstruction is not very serious when the patient has a simple intestinal obstruction, while strangulated intestinal obstruction is more serious when the patient has a strangulated intestinal obstruction. Patients with simple intestinal obstruction will have abdominal pain, flatulence and vomiting due to the obstruction of gastric contents, but the blood flow of the intestinal tube is normal, and patients will not have a series of serious symptoms such as peritoneal irritation sign and ascites after timely treatment. However, in strangulated intestinal obstruction, due to the obstruction of intestinal blood flow, patients will not only have persistent severe abdominal pain and vomiting, but also have bloody mucus-like stools, as well as signs of peritoneal irritation and mobile turbid sounds. In the late stage, patients with strangulated intestinal obstruction will also show obvious signs of dehydration and systemic toxicity and shock, which are more serious and life-threatening. In addition to basic treatment such as fasting, gastrointestinal decompression, supplementation of electrolytes and nutrients, etc., patients with strangulated intestinal obstruction should also undergo timely surgery to relieve the obstruction, and the commonly used surgical methods include adhesion release surgery, intestinal segment resection and so on. Patients with intestinal obstruction usually need to pay attention to not strenuous activities after meals, do not force defecation and so on. Abdominal pain, abdominal distension and other symptoms should be promptly consulted to avoid aggravation of the condition.
