Shortness of breath after going to the bathroom, how to treat

If you are short of breath after using the toilet, you should first rest in a calm sitting position and go to the hospital as soon as possible.
Shortness of breath after using the restroom, clinically known as dyspnea, is a sign of reduced activity tolerance. According to the NYHA Cardiac Classification and the mMRC Dyspnea Questionnaire, when cardiorespiratory function declines, dyspnea may occur with light activity, even after brushing teeth, taking a shower, or going to the bathroom, or during a calm resting state.
The treatment of reduced activity tolerance should first assess the degree of criticality, and if dyspnea persists and is not relieved by rest, then immediate emergency medical attention is required. The most fundamental treatment is to control the primary disease. In case of heart disease or cardiac insufficiency, medication should be administered according to the cause of the disease, and activities should be minimized to avoid triggering acute heart failure.
For respiratory diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), in addition to medication, home oxygen therapy with a home ventilator can also be used to slow down the progression of the disease.
Decreased activity tolerance is one of the signals of critical illness and should not be treated on its own. It is recommended to go to the hospital for evaluation and treatment as soon as possible to avoid delaying the condition.
