Erythromycin Ophthalmic Ointment Effects and Indications

Erythromycin Ophthalmic Ointment is indicated for the treatment of superficial eye infections of the conjunctiva or cornea caused by erythromycin-sensitive microorganisms, primarily for the treatment of trachoma, conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and infections external to the eye. Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis and has antimicrobial activity against gram-positive bacteria and Chlamydia trachomatis. Erythromycin ophthalmic ointment may cause drug interactions and even eye infections when used in conjunction with other medications and needs to be used under the supervision of a physician. Erythromycin ophthalmic ointment can be used to treat eye infections by applying it to the inside of the eyelids two to three times a day. However, certain adverse reactions may occur, such as changes in vision, persistent redness or irritation in the eyes, etc. Consult your physician before using erythromycin ophthalmic ointment and it is contraindicated in case of allergy to the drug. Avoid contact with the mouth and nose while using it and seek medical attention if you experience discomfort.
